Why Ukrainian Granite Is in Global Demand
Ukraine ranks among the world's top 5 granite producers. The most renowned deposits are Kapustinsky (pink), Leznikovsky (grey) and Tokivsky (black) quarries. HS code: 2516.11 (granite, crude or roughly trimmed).
Demand grows steadily: granite is used in construction, countertop production, memorial monuments and facing slabs. Key importers include Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Israel and the USA.
Shipment Forms and Grading
Granite can be shipped as blocks (first-, second- and third-grade per DSTU or GOST standards), slabs (2–3 cm thick, 180–330×60–200 cm), or finished products (tiles, countertops, memorials).
Block quality is assessed by volume (m³), absence of cracks, surface evenness and colour uniformity. Perform incoming inspection before loading and include a photo report for the buyer.
Logistics and Packaging
Blocks are transported on metal cradles in open or semi-closed containers. Slabs and tiles are typically shipped in wooden frames or bundles of 2–4 t each. All wooden packaging elements must be ISPM 15 treated.
The optimal route to the EU is by rail to Mostyska/Krakivets, then by truck; or RO-RO ferry through Black Sea ports to the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Customs Clearance
Import duty on rough granite to the EU is 0% with an EUR.1 certificate. For finished products the code changes to 6802.23 — the duty rate may differ, so check with a customs broker.
Documents: commercial invoice with precise description (rock type, grade, dimensions, weight), bill of lading or CMR, EUR.1 certificate of origin, measurement records (geological-mineralogical reference if required by the buyer).
