Organic Egg Market Potential
The EU organic egg market grows at 6–8% annually. The product is classified under HS code 0407.21 (fresh shell eggs, hens). Poland, Germany and Austria are the largest importers of organic eggs.
Ukraine has a competitive advantage due to low organic production costs and large volumes. However, entering the EU market requires a range of permits and compliance with specific regulatory requirements.
Veterinary Requirements and Certification
To export eggs to the EU, the poultry farm must be registered in TRACES (EU Trade Control and Expert System) and hold an official veterinary status. The State Food Safety Service of Ukraine conducts annual audits.
For "organic" status, certification under EU Regulation 2018/848 from an accredited body (Control Union, Ecocert, etc.) is required. The certificate confirms free-range conditions, organic feed and absence of antibiotics.
Packaging and Labelling
Eggs are packed in plastic or paper trays of 10, 12 or 30 with mandatory labelling: producer code, size category (S/M/L/XL), housing system code ("0" for organic), best-before date and country of origin.
Transport packaging uses corrugated cartons or plastic containers with cell inserts. Temperature range during transport: +5°C to +18°C, with no sharp fluctuations.
Logistics and Customs
Eggs must be transported exclusively by refrigerated vehicles. Shelf life from lay date is 28 days, so delivery speed is critical. The optimal route is road transport Ukraine–Poland, with transit time under 24 hours.
At the EU border, a veterinary certificate (EHC form per EU Decision), TRACES notification and customs declaration are required. Having a permanent EU-based customs broker speeds up clearance significantly.
